Volunteering Opportunities

If you are interested in gaining some work experience working with animals, volunteering can be a very rewarding experience where you can develop new skills. If you are over 18 and have some spare time, volunteering is still a great way to get hands on experience of interacting with the public, spending time around animals and learning more about the way a zoo really works. If you want to volunteer with the animals, our small animal team looks for individuals who are keen to get their hands dirty and help out our keepers with their daily routine.

Daily Tasks include:

  • Assisting with morning rounds
  • Carrying out food preparations
  • Helping with general enclosure maintenance and care
  • Assisting to build and designing animal enrichment

This is one of the more demanding roles, and requires confident, sensible individuals with a real passion for animals. If you think you could be one of our hard working team come rain or shine then this is the role for you.

Due to high demand and staff numbers, role spaces are limited and we may not be able to offer you an opportunity straight away.

Common Questions

1) How much time am I expected to commit?

You can offer as little or as much time as you are able to donate. To get the most out of your opportunity with us, we ask that you can work with us for a full day. A typical day for a volunteer is the same as our keeper working day, 8 until 5. With regular breaks and a set lunch break.

2) How many days am I expected to commit?

Again, you can offer as many or as few days as you are able. If you are able to offer at least one regular day a week, then it would benefit yourself and us in the training process. The more we can rely on you to provide a set day, the more opportunities we can offer you and the greater your experiences will be.

3) What is the age limit for volunteers?

Due to Health and Safety standards we are unable to accept any volunteer under the age of 18.

4) I have to complete work experience for my school / college course, can I volunteer?

Work experience is different to volunteering and if you are interested in a work placement, please Contact Us.
