Working at the zoo.
Being part of the team at Northumberland Zoo is an amazing opportunity for anyone who loves wildlife and conservation.
Northumberland Zoo is an up-and-coming animal collection based in the heart of the countryside and is constantly evolving and growing.

Volunteering
at the Zoo.
Northumberland Zoo is looking for hard working and dedicated volunteers to assist its team of keepers in all their daily animal husbandry tasks. This is an amazing opportunity and would suit students completing related studies who want to add some practical experience to their learning.
Keeper volunteers would be required between 08:00 and 17:00 during summer months and 08:00 and 16:30 during the winter. This role is physically demanding and requires a willingness to ‘get your hands dirty!’, but it is very rewarding. Although it is not necessary, those with previous husbandry experience, an animal care qualification, or who are studying for one, do have an advantage when applicants are many.

Our walkthrough enclosures are undoubtedly some of the most popular attractions at the Zoo. We have Lemur Woods and Wallaby Walkabout.
Visitors have the opportunity to enter these enclosures to observe the animals more closely.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to provide our guests with a fun and informative visit to these areas. Lemur Woods is home to our all-male group of ring tailed lemurs, while Wallaby Walkabout houses both Bennett's and Parma wallabies.
The lemur walk through is open for a few hours each day so this role would suit someone who has a spare few hours a week, but perhaps not a whole day. This is one of the less physically demanding roles of the zoo, but perfect if you enjoy spending time with animals and talking to people about them!
Volunteering under the supervision of the Head and Deputy Keepers, walk-through volunteers will receive full training in order to monitor the behaviour of the animals, advise visitors and answer questions from guests.

Groundskeeping volunteer.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers, who don’t mind a little bit hard work and who would enjoy seeing the benefits of their efforts grow and mature into areas that are welcoming and appealing. Previous groundkeeper experience is not required as training will be given.
Groundkeeper volunteers would be appreciated between 10.30am and 2pm and for the duration of the summer and autumn seasons.
Volunteering as a groundskeeper will be under the supervision of the groundskeeping team and you may be working alongside the current team, individually or with other volunteers.
