We are recruiting for several different roles at the Zoo currently, with full-time and part-time positions available.

Cafe Customer Service (x4)

Temporary for Easter & Summer Holiday period

​

The roles:

  • March – September 2024

  • 3 roles x 20hrs per week, 5 days out of 7, 11am – 3pm

  • 1 role x 40hrs per week, 5 days out of 7, 8.30am – 5pm (30 mins lunch)

  • Must be able to work weekends and bank holidays on a rota

  • Up to £11.00p/h (increase in April)

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Working in our busy Bear Falls Cafe - taking food to customers, clearing tables, replenishing sauces, serviettes and cutlery. Keeping the recycling area clear, clean and tidy. Washing dishes, taking food orders using an electronic till system, making hot drinks using a commercial coffee machine and some basic food preparation making toasted sandwiches.

  • Previous experience in a similar environment is essential and a food hygiene qualification would be an advantage

  • Will require own transport as the Zoo is in a rural setting with no public transport

Gift Shop Customer Service (x1)

Temporary for Easter & Summer Holiday period with potential for permanent position.

The role:

  • March – September 2024

  • 40 hrs per week, 5 days out of 7, 9am – 5.30pm

  • Must be able to work weekends and bank holidays on a rota

  • Up to £11.00ph (increase in April)

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Working in our busy Gift shop – Welcoming customers to the Zoo and giving our welcome speech, replenishing stock, keeping the shop looking full and attractive, serving customers using electronic till systems, washing and vacuuming floors at the end of the day

  • Previous experience in a similar role and environment is essential

  • Will require own transport as the Zoo is in a rural setting with no public transport

 

Closing date: Sunday 17th March 2024

Zoo Custodian

Initially for 12 months

The role:

  • April 2024 – April 2025

  • 32hrs per week, 4 days out of 7, Wed - Sat, 8am – 5pm (1hr lunch)

  • Must be flexible and able to cover for holidays working weekends and bank holidays occasionally

  • Up to £11.00ph (increase due in April)

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Taking ownership for the presentation of the zoo by maintaininghigh standards which includes emptying bins and litter picking

  • Servicing bins, toilets as well as cleaning any communal areas. Ensuring that all public areas are presentable and tidy.

  • Helping out in the Cafe at lunchtime; clearing and wiping cafe tables and chairs, collecting and washing food trays, keeping the waste and recycling area clean and tidy, taking out food to customers as necessary, washing up and keeping the condiment section fully stocked and tidy

  • Being prepared to undertake ad hoc projects such as painting internal and external areas and planting up flower containers

  • Strictly adhering to risk assessments and safe working practices.

  • This full-time position requires someone to be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including working on weekends, during school holidays as well as bank holidays on a rota alongside the customer service team.

Gardener/Groundskeeper

We are looking for someone with a good knowledge of growing vegetables so we can feed our animals with our own fruit and veg. If you have a genuine interest in gardening and horticulture and know what vegetables grow well in Northumberland and how best to do it, then this may be the job for you. You will be surrounded by animals and work alongside a small friendly team.

The role:

  • March 2024 – March 2025

  • 40hrs per week, 5 days out of 7, Mon – Fri, 8am – 5pm (1hr lunch)

  • Flexibility required to cover for holidays working weekends and Bank holidays

  • Up to £11.25ph (increase in April)

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Must have experience of successfully growing vegetables. You will be growing in our poly tunnel and surrounding outdoor areas and must have a genuine interest in gardening

  • As well as growing, you will be involved in landscaping, mowing, planting, strimming, weeding and groundwork

  • You will also require some DIY skills and the ability to drive Zoo vehicles and operate machinery & equipment

  • Experience of using garden equipment and hand tools is essential

  • A horticulture qualification is desirable but not essential

  • Will require own transport as the Zoo is in a rural setting with no public transport
